Why CNC Machining is Used in the Automotive Industry

CNC machining – a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery – has transformed part manufacturing in the automotive industry. What once was done by hand is now done by CNC machining at an incredibly fast and more accurate pace.

As related to prototyping, CNC machining plays a key role because it allows manufacturers to create prototypes and identify possible design flaws before mass quantities are produced. Design requirements and deadlines are met while faulty parts are avoided. The operations can include turning, milling, and drilling across plastics, metals, and composite materials. Almost every part that collectively builds a vehicle can be created by CNC machining. Why? Because CNC machining is precise, accurate, and repeatable.

In addition to those attributes, CNC machining for the automotive industry has two other important advantages: speed and automation. Since CNC machines have little human direction and interaction but rather rely on computer instructions, things such as operator error and fatigue are minimal or non-existent. The result is high speed production, which means high-volume manufacturing.

Automation, of course, also means that there is little human involvement or mistake. The perhaps not-so-obvious upside of automation is that it allows manufacturers to focus on design, functionality, and innovation. All those things can lead to a competitive advantage.

From axles to gearboxes to cylinder heads to motors to dashboards to headlights to interior lighting – and everything in between – CNC machining plays a vital role in the manufacture of automotive parts.
